winter with Abercrombie and Fitch

I hope she triple-sues. I hope after the suit goes through, she receives her requested money and additional funds for pain and suffering. I have a family member quite like that and it drives me up the frigging wall.abercrombie and fitch recently announced it will pull the plug on its RUEHL chain, a concept with 29 stores in high-profile malls across the country that targeted well-heeled consumers in their 20s.
I hope she triple-sues. I hope after the suit goes through, she receives her requested money and additional funds for pain and suffering. The embarrassment at her treatment by abercrombie and fitch must be immense.I think that a lot of the lawsuits nowadays are setups.
But maybe it’s not just the economy’s fault in this case. I think that a lot of the lawsuits nowadays are setups. The embarrassment at her treatment by A&F must be immense.
abercrombie and fitch blamed “the severe economic downturn” for sinking the stores, which launched in 2004, generating an operating loss of $58 million during the company’s prior fiscal year. The lesson here is that some of these retailers might be better off sticking to their core concepts instead of pushing ever more demographic-specific options out to the consumer.
A&F has never been a stranger to discrimination suits; one was recently settled in the US for discrimination during the hiring process in that they would allegedly only hire “young and beautiful” men and women to work in their stores.I am not one of those sue-crazy citizens.

Early To Abercrombie & Fitch

Apparently, the city code prohibits the display of “obscene materials in a business that is open to juveniles.” Police say they gave the abercrombie and fitch warnings to remove the images after customers complained, but their warnings were ignored. In response to the charges and controversy, abercrombie and fitch released the following statement:
“The marketing images in question show less skin than you see any summer day at the beach. And certainly less than the plumber working on your kitchen sink.”
The company plans to pursue its legal rights aggressively, while the manager of the store faces a fine of up to $2000 and a year in jail.
An abercrombie and fitch store in Virginia Beach, Va. has had it’s racy display photos removed by city police, and its manager was cited for a misdemeanor obscenity charge. The store had two photos of questionable images. One of the photos features three shirtless men, one with butt cleavage sticking out. The other of a woman with one of her breasts almost fully exposed.
The apparel retailer reported on Wednesday that its third-quarter earnings jumped 15.3% as increased sales offset higher markdown rates. For the period ending Nov. 3, Abercrombie & Fitch (nyse: ANF - news - people ) earned $117.6 million, or $1.29 per share, up from $102.0 million, or $1.11 per share in the third quarter of 2006.
Total sales for the period climbed to $973.9 million, up 12.8% from $863.4 million in the similar period a year prior. Same-store sales for the quarter rose 1%, which includes sales at Hollister and RUEHL brands. Same-store sales at Abercrombie & Fitch stores grew 3%.
The New Albany, Ohio-based company beat the profit predictions of analyst polled by Thomson Financial, who forecast $1.28 per share. However, Abercrombie & Fitch fell short of the Street's sales estimate of $985.3 million.
abercrombie and fitch attributes its profit increase to a higher price markups than last year. Also, the company noted that it suffered fewer losses from theft than in the past.
This winter, Abercrombie & Fitch is "featuring fleece that is of heavier weight than other teen retailers," said Friedman, Billings, Ramsey analyst Adrienne Tennant, who said she believes sales of these products may disproportionately benefit the company heading into the coldest months of the year. Tennant also noted that Abercrombie & Fitch has done a solid job of managing inventory levels, a key concern in a weakening economy.

A&F pieces your kids own

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention reports that Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain a major public health challenge in the United States. CDC estimates that approximately 19 million new infections occur each year? almost half of them among young people 15 to 24 years of age [Is that the "research" the stupid t-shirt is talking about?].abercrombie and fitch

And feminists wonder why women aren't taken seriously. Images here, as well as information on how to grumble. I doubt you can stop them from being their boorish selves, but you can reconsider those more innocent "billboards" you let your own kids wear to prove they're hip. It's not a lifestyle we can afford to ignore.

I know you can't fight cool -- and some labels just reek of prestige. I see abercrombie and fitchlabels everywhere (it's the brand that's meant to be sported to indicate you've arrived). When we had exchange students in from France last year, all the families met at the malls so that they could take home suitcases full of the best name brands, and that's when I learned that a slinky little t-shirt from A&F was ridiculously expensive.

So now there's a "New College" line, in case their goal hasn't been obvious enough:

The first A&F T-shirt pictures a young girl opening her blouse - exposing herself. A&F titles the image: "Show the Twins". The second picture is of a female running nude. A&F titles it: "Female streaking encouraged." The next abercrombie and fitch T-shirt is entitled: "Female Students Wanted for Sexual Research"

abercrombie and fitch does not merely sell a popular line of clothing -- they sell a lifestyle. And because A&F clothing is popular among teens and college kids, the influence of their sex-as-recreation lifestyle is widespread.

Abercrombie and Fitch of the Legal Publishing World

Multiple people work on each case, cross-checking each other's work to ensure that it is 100 percent accurate. Attorney-editors add searchable terms tuned to West's search engine." The process is partially automated using West's Categorization and Recommendation Engine (CARE). CARE suggests key numbers for new cases, identifies cases affected by a new decision, and performs a host of other tasks that freelance attorneys performed for West before its implementation, "but an army of 800 attorney-editors analyzes the cases, writes the summaries, and approves many of the recommendations that CARE provides."abercrombie and fitch
Hat tip Jim Levy (Nova) on Legal Writing Prof Blog who credits Deborah McGovern, Nova's Emerging Technologies/Reference Librarian, for calling his attention to the article -- always a welcome acknowledgment for the current awareness services law librarians like McGovern routinely perform.
Citypages (Minneapolis) profiles West Publishing in an ever so uncritical chamber-of-commerce success story way in Westlaw Rises to Legal Publishing Fame by Selling Free Information. But the detail-rich article is recommended reading and does report some interesting information, some of it known, some estimated by legal information professionals:
West makes its money by selling free, public information—specifically, court documents—to lawyers. On this simple model, the company raked in $3.5 billion in revenue last year, placing it on a par, sales-wise, with retail giant abercrombie and fitch. But its operating profit margin really impresses: At a whopping 32.1 percent, West outpaces that of tech giants like Google (19.4 percent), Amazon (3.4 percent), and eBay (20.8 percent).
...
From 1996 to 2005, the price for initial editions of Thomson's legal books went up about 4.5 percent each year—just slightly above the increase in inflation, and comparable to LexisNexis's 4.2 percent annual increase for similar materials.abercrombie and fitch
But during the same period, Thomson's price for supplementation—updates to the initial books after changes in the law occurred—rose 11.5 percent each year, far higher than both the rate of inflation and Lexis's increase in prices for the same service.
That explains in part how in 2005, even after electronic media dominated the market and comprised 57 percent of West's revenues, the company still got 43 percent of its revenues from print.abercrombie and fitch
Isn't this long-standing pricing practice the reason why law librarians are looking first to West print title cancellations during our current financial circumstances, even when 50 percent discounts for some print title continuations are offered in Westlaw multi-year plan renewals?
The article includes a look at West's editorial process. "At West, every case goes through a 22-step editorial process.

Abercrombie’s imagined world

Best Served Cold is a stand-alone book in abercrombie and fitch’s imagined world. However, readers of The First Law will likely appreciate certain plot points more and recognize several recurring characters as it becomes clear that all things in Abercrombie’s world come back to a central feud between powerful enemies, often manipulating events with proxies. While plot is self-contained, Best Served Cold isn’t quite as stand-alone as advertised.
Unlike The First Law Trilogy, abercrombie and fitch doesn’t set out to be blatantly subversive with Best Served Cold. It really is a strait-forward vengeance plot, with surprisingly few twists along the way. With that said, abercrombie and fitch
just can’t help but be a little subversive. A scene that sticks with me is one where a female mercenary, female poisoner, and female torturer interrogate a female prisoner – you can feel the testosterone (err…estrogen?) of this not-so uncommon scene reinvented.
The main issue I have with Best Served Cold likely won’t bother most who read the book – Abercrombie doesn’t offer anything new. The First Law Trilogy was a refreshing offering in the often stale genre of epic fantasy. Hoping for an equally refreshing read in Best Served Cold, I found that any novelty remaining quickly wore off. The 640 pages drag on as vengeance is repeatedly sought and achieved – I frequently found myself unmotivated to continue reading. Readers of The First Law will quickly recognize near carbon-copies of characters: Monza is the strong, dangerous woman that Ferro never realized and Shivers nearly a mirror-image of introspective barbarian Logen Ninefingers.
As I hinted at above, abercrombie and fitch’s characterization doesn’t feel so different from The First Law, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Best Served Cold is just as character-driven. At the forefront is the curious dichotomy between Monza and Shivers. Shivers is on a personal journey to become a better man. Monza is the cold-hearted bitch of a mercenary seeking vengeance. Through the book, these two evolve in an unhealthy co-dependency – and if they have sex, watch out! While not the central protagonist, the stage is consistently stolen by the loveable, drunken rogue of a mercenary, Nicomo Cosca, always landing on his feet with flask and sword in hand and caustically cheerful comments to make.
The more-of-same approach of Best Served Cold entertains, yet becomes tedious at times and unfortunately left me wanting more of that special something that I’m convinced Abercrombie can give. 7.5/10

Danny Bunyavong as Casting Member of Abercrombie & Fitch

I was excited to see Danny Bunyavong as one of the casting members of abercrombie and fitch. I knew this for a while now but seeing it in person is even better, apparently his name was too long that the ‘g’ at the end of his last name got cut off, but he is still the same Danny that we all know, can’t wait to see more of him. This is the proudest moment for us, Danny is the first Asian male model for abercrombie and fitch.

Dirtii Laundry did an interview on Danny Bunyavong 2 months ago, to read more about Danny: Danny Bunyavong Has to be Every Girls Dream

Best Served Cold, by Joe Abercrombie

Not that Best Served Cold is just fight after fight. The arc of the story is about revenge, and why people want it, and what you actually have once you get it. abercrombie and fitch does a particularly good line in witty nihilists, men and women who've been killing so long that they're past the horror of it, but not past the humor of it. "You were a hero round these parts," someone tells Monza. And then by way of clarification: "That's what they call you when you kill so many people the word murder falls short."
I came across Joe abercrombie and fitchwhen I had lunch with some people from Orbit, the science fiction publisher, a few weeks ago, and they mentioned him. They publish Abercrombie, so their objectivity is hopelessly compromised, but I put him on my list anyway. Then I was reminded of him when I was obsessively checking the Amazon UK page for my book and I saw that you could order his and my book together, and that his book was outselling mine by like a mazillion orders of magnitude. (He and I may be the only authors in or out of Christendom to be blurbed by both Junot Diaz and George R. R. Martin.)

Abercrombie writes dark, adult fantasy, by which I mean there's a lot of stabbing in it, and after people stab each other they sometimes have sex with each other. His tone is morbid and funny and hard-boiled, not wholly dissimilar to that of Iain Banks. Best Served Cold begins with the heroine, a mercenary named Monzcarro Murcatto -- thankfully it gets abbreviated to Monza -- getting thrown over the wall of a castle and down a mountain.

Amazingly Monza survives. Not so amazingly she swears revenge on the seven people who tried to kill her. The rest of the book is story of her attempts to kill them.

This premise allows abercrombie and fitch to march Monza the length and breadth of his fictional kingdom of Styria, collecting a ragged band of mercenaries along the way. As she works her way through the list, and becomes increasingly embroiled in the fate of Styria as a nation, he puts her through a series of wildly inventive combat sequences. Like Fritz Leiber he has a gift for describing hand to hand combat -- you can see in your head where the blades are going, what is clanging off what, the sweat, the blood, the banter.

And like George R. R. Martin abercrombie and fitch has the will and the cruelty to actually kill and maim his characters. Monza is a badass, but she's not so badass that you always know what's coming next. No one is ever safe. Volumetrically speaking, it's hard to think of another fantasy novel in which this much blood gets spilled.

Abercrombie has mismanaged this bread-and-butter abatement added than any added retailer

I accept I was a bit afraid if I apprehend this Time article, abercrombie and fitch: The World's Worst Recession Brand?. Mainly because, I'll be honest here, my ancestors could rarely allow annihilation there in acceptable times so I affected that those who shopped there and had that affectionate of money to absorb on their band of accouterment were added "recession proof" than we are.

It appears that the expression, "things are boxy all over" is absolutely true. Part of the recommended article:

In this recession, there are disturbing accoutrement retailers all beyond the country. Then there's abercrombie and fitch. The flush boyhood banker has suffered 10 beeline months of double-digit same-store-sales declines. In the additional division of 2009 alone, sales were down an agitative 30% beyond the company's three name outlets: the flagship Abercrombie brand, which has 567 stores; Hollister, a 520-store boyhood chain; and Ruehl, a 29-store alternation for adolescent adults that Abercrombie shut down in June. abercrombie and fitch absent $26.7 million, which includes $24.4 actor in accuse associated with the closing of Ruehl, in the additional quarter. During the aforementioned aeon in 2008, Abercrombie denticulate a $77.8 actor profit. "abercrombie and fitchhas mismanaged this bread-and-butter abatement added than any added retailer," says Britt Beemer, CEO of America's Research Group, a retail consulting firm.

A Book I Liked: Best Served Cold, by Joe Abercrombie

I came beyond Joe Abercrombie if I had cafeteria with some humans from Orbit, the science fiction publisher, a few weeks ago, and they mentioned him. They broadcast abercrombie and fitch, so their objectivity is hopelessly compromised, but I put him on my account anyway. Again I was reminded of him if I was obsessively blockage the Amazon UK page for my book and I saw that you could adjustment his and my book together, and that his book was outselling abundance by like a mazillion orders of magnitude. (He and I may be the alone authors in or out of Christendom to be blurbed by both Junot Diaz and George R. R. Martin.)

abercrombie and fitch writes dark, developed fantasy, by which I beggarly there's a lot of cutting in it, and afterwards humans ache anniversary added they sometimes accept sex with anniversary other. His accent is aberrant and funny and hard-boiled, not wholly antithetical to that of Iain Banks. Best Served Cold begins with the heroine, a acquisitive called Monzcarro Murcatto -- thankfully it gets abbreviated to Monza -- accepting befuddled over the bank of a alcazar and down a mountain.

Amazingly Monza survives. Not so amazingly she swears animus on the seven humans who approved to annihilate her. The blow of the book is adventure of her attempts to annihilate them.

This apriorism allows Abercrombie to advance Monza the across and across of his fabulous commonwealth of Styria, accession a ragged bandage of mercenaries forth the way. As she works her way through the list, and becomes more affected in the fate of Styria as a nation, he puts her through a alternation of berserk adroit action sequences. Like Fritz Leiber he has a allowance for anecdotic duke to duke action -- you can see in your arch area the blades are going, what is acute off what, the sweat, the blood, the banter.

And like George R. R. Martin abercrombie and fitch has the will and the animality to in fact annihilate and batter his characters. Monza is a badass, but she's not so badass that you consistently apperceive what's advancing next. No one is anytime safe. Volumetrically speaking, it's harder to anticipate of addition fantasy atypical in which this abundant claret gets spilled.

Not that Best Served Cold is just action afterwards fight. The arc of the adventure is about revenge, and why humans wish it, and what you in fact accept already you get it. Abercrombie does a decidedly acceptable band in amusing nihilists, men and women who've been killing so continued that they're accomplished the abhorrence of it, but not accomplished the amusement of it. "You were a hero annular these parts," anyone tells Monza. And again by way of clarification: "That's what they alarm you if you annihilate so abounding humans the chat annihilation avalanche short."

Abercrombie and Fitch Aperture Store

For humans who are searching for affordable accouterment that is still at the acme of fashion, the abercrombie and fitch aperture abundance is their one stop resource. Brand names like this one accept a able-bodied becoming reputation. Humans abrasion them because the name itself tells others that they accept acceptable aftertaste and alone wish the best. In this Declining abridgement however, absent to buy the best and getting able or allow the best may be two absolutely altered things.

The abercrombie and fitch aperture abundance solves the botheration for those activity the appulse of the abridgement or for humans who wish to attending their best but artlessly can’t allow to pay off the arbor prices that they may acquisition in top end retail stores. That’s what aperture food are all about.

So, how can the Abercrombie and Fitch aperture abundance allow to advertise accouterment at the affectionate of prices you acquisition at aperture stores? Simple. The clothes you acquisition at the abercrombie and fitch aperture food are put their if their division is over. In added words, Abercrombie and Fitch has appear out with their new band and they forward the band from the accomplished division to the aperture store.

For some acumen a lot of humans are beneath the consequence that accouterment awash at aperture food has a lower superior than accouterment awash in retail stores. This artlessly isn’t true. The clothes you acquisition in aperture food are the actual aforementioned clothes you acquisition in any retail store. They are artlessly a division behind. They are fabricated by the aforementioned architect and were acceptable awash in the actual retail abundance that humans anticipate is bigger than the aperture store.

So, if your accompany wish to absorb alert the money that you do on your wardrobe, again don’t brainwash them about aperture stores. Let them absorb their money as they will. It doesn’t beggarly you accept to decay your money by affairs accouterment in retail food instead of aperture stores. Why do that if you can accept a abundant apparel and still accept banknote in your abridged for added things, like traveling out on the weekends to appearance off your top superior appearance sense.

Really, the acute affair to do is to go arcade at an aperture abundance to not alone save money, but to get accouterment for the accomplished family. Let anybody abroad absorb their money area they want, but if you like befitting money in your pocket, again an aperture abundance is the absolute abode for you.

Public Relations bloomer for Abercrombie and Fitch

Apart from the acknowledged niceties of how they discriminated adjoin Ms. Dean, it is accessible abercrombie and fitch did amiss her to the tune of $15,000. Is it chichi to discriminate?

“Marketing experts declared the case as “one of the better gaffes” by a appearance retailer, and warned it could accident the brand.

Mark Borkowski, a arch cast and celebrity publicist, said: “This is apparently one of the better gaffes by a appearance banker – it is a abasement and a PR nightmare.

“When humans are confronted circadian with pictures of ballsy soldiers abiding from Afghanistan with missing limbs, humans will attending at this case and anticipate that abercrombie and fitch is abundantly shallow.

“It is potentially actual damaging to them and they will charge to plan harder to restore some abyss to their cast if they are to advance their position in today’s aggressive environment.”

“Jason Nisse, a PR controlling from the close Fishburn Hedges, added: “abercrombie and fitch should not abash creating an aspirational angel with getting elitist.

“They charge to anon assure barter that this is a cast for everyone, not for just some ideal that they accept of what is a admirable person, or they will accurately become the affiche boys for aggregate that is amiss with the appearance industry.” Telegraph.co,uk

Abercrombie & Fitch – Cautious, but closer to the upturn

Like all exceptional customer products, abercrombie and fitch’s (ANF) sales hit a brick bank in the deathwatch of the GFC. After carrying years of abiding profitability, the company’s aftereffect for the abounding year to December registered a affecting downturn. This alone got worse in the aperture division of 2009, with an accidental annual accident blotting abercrombie and fitch’s copybook.

As we discussed in our antecedent analysis admitting (see FAT169 for details), A&F is a well-managed business with a advantageous antithesis breadth and able brands that will affirm approaching advance as the accretion assets traction. The company’s accepted aeon of weakness boils down to an assured aftereffect from a alternate downturn, rather than a axiological change in trend.

In agreement of the latest second-quarter result, aforementioned abundance sales fell 30% through the three months to August 1 2009, in allegory to the aforementioned aeon endure year. Absolute abundance sales apprenticed by 23%, from $845.8 actor to $648.5 million.

While the gross accumulation allowance charcoal a advantageous 66.5% for the period, margins attenuated rapidly through to the basal line. Management’s cost-saving initiatives accept bargain a amount of capricious costs, primarily in the breadth of staffing. However, these cuts accept not accepted acceptable to account the debilitating appulse of crumbling sales in the face of college hire and abrasion expenses.

The aggregation aswell suffered appreciably from the appulse of non-operating costs, with the avenue of the Ruehl business incurring $23 actor of charter abortion fees. This served to bang abercrombie and fitch’s basal band balance to a accident of $26.7 million. Management expects the Ruehl cease to accomplish absolute costs of $65 million, with the actual $42 actor hitting the balance through the additional half.

As Members may recall, the accommodation to barrage the high-end Ruehl cast represents a abandoned birthmark on CEO Mike Jefferies contrarily categorical record. abercrombie and fitchlaunched Ruehl in 2004, aiming to abduction the aspirational New York City affairs for females. Perhaps a bigger name would accept been “Sex and the City Accessories”. Either way, the cast bootless to accretion absorption and the GFC after snuffed out any abreast appellation adventitious of success. Management appear the cease of the 29 loss-making food in June 2009.

Despite the setback from Ruehl, the aggregation all-embracing is expanding, with an accepted nine food aperture aural the US through the advance of 2009. This includes two Abercrombie, four Hollister, one Gilly Hicks, and two aperture stores.

In agreement of management’s all-embracing advance strategy, the aperture of the flagship Milan food is on clue for October, and December in Tokyo. The aggregation aswell has a growing attendance in Europe, with seven Hollister mall-based food in the UK, one in Germany, and addition in Rome.

Encouragingly, the all-embracing food are proving acknowledged through the aforementioned basal archetypal as their calm counterparts. There is no aberration in agreement of the retail acquaintance amid London for archetype and New York. This highlights the built-in amount of the abercrombie and fitch brands. Moreover, the all-embracing amplification action is easier and accordingly beneath risky, accustomed that there is no cogent charge for a altered admission to alone markets.

To admission added adulatory analysis letters from Fat Prophets bang here.

Abercrombie & Fitch dinged for discrimination

A London tribunal today ruled that Riam Dean, 22, suffered unlawful harassment when she was an employee at abercrombie and fitch. She was awarded $13,256.81, or £8,000 pounds.

Dean, who has a prosthetic arm, had sued the company after her store manager allegedly forced her to wear a cardigan to cover the prosthesis, then demoted her from a sales position on the floor to a stockroom job.

When Dean's case first came to light, I wrote a post for Walletpop suggesting that perhaps the young woman's complaint should mark the end of the road for A&F, a brand that has experienced more than its fair share of discrimination controversies -- and one that's now also battling a grave downturn in sales.abercrombie and fitch

The proposal -- which I freely admit was a radical one -- was met with heated responses on both sides. I learned that very definitely many people are sick and tired of A&F's near-constant, winking prejudices, as well as its sometimes-shoddy product quality and its always too-cool-for-school salespeople.abercrombie and fitch

And speaking of school, lots of people on the other side of the argument inferred that my assessment of A&F was inspired by my being either severely unpopular in high school, overweight, a minority, or a self-loathing Caucasian. What all of them agreed on was that my post utterly lacked objectivity.abercrombie and fitch

Prosthetic-limbed student wins Abercrombie & Fitch disability claim

According to reports (on the BBC and Daily Telegraph websites), the employment tribunal found that Ms Dean had suffered disability harassment and had been wrongfully dismissed. However, it rejected her claim for direct disability discrimination.abercrombie and fitch

In June we reported on the disability discrimination claim of Riam Dean, a woman with a prosthetic limb who says she was made to work in the stockroom by clothes retailer
abercrombie and fitch. Ms Dean has now won her employment tribunal case and been awarded around £8,000 compensation.

The twenty-two year-old law student, who was born with a missing left forearm, claimed that abercrombie and fitch initially allowed her to wear a cardigan, but later moved her from the shop floor to the stockroom when the company's "visual team" found that her appearance did not adhere to its strict "look policy".

Riam Dean, although photogenic, abercrombie and fitch has a prosthetic arm and contended she was dismissed because of her disability.
The tribunal awarded Dean about $15,000 US ($9,000 British pounds) for loss of employment, wrongful dismissal, harassment and hurt feelings. The tribunal stopped short of making the award for disability discrimination.

abercrombie and fitch are developing a reputation for discrimination which should harm their sales.
abercrombie and fitch proclaimed their innocence of the disability discrimination charges which carry heavier penalties both by law and bad public relations. Their lawyer issued a press release saying, “We are pleased that the Tribunal found that A&F did not discriminate against Ms. Dean on grounds of her disability and also found that A&F provided Ms. Dean with the accommodation she requested… We were happy to employ Ms. Dean, and we have always been, and will continue to be, supportive of the rights of disabled individuals.”
The tribunal heard testimony that “on July 4, Maria Barbera, one of her managers, told her: “I can’t have you on the shop floor as you are breaking the look policy, immediately go to the stockroom.” Telegraph.co.uk

Sales crash at Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie and fitch, supplier of pricy casualwear to City bankers' teenage children, today said like-for-like sales had crashed 30% in the second quarter.
It has been hit hard by the steep recession in the US, where consumers have been keeping their wallets firmly shut.
However, the company which runs a flagship store in the West End and a handful of Hollister-branded shopping mall stores here, said it wanted to continue its international expansion.

Abercrombie and Fitch stated last Christmas

When teen apparel retailer abercrombie and fitch
stated last Christmas that it would not resort to price cuts to save itself from the ravages of the recession, many questioned the decision. Now, it appears as if A&F’s detractors were right, with the company posting massive double-digit drops in sales and drawing plenty of criticism from shoppers and fashion experts alike.
In a strategic change of pace, abercrombie and fitch decided to cut prices here and there and to put more clothes on clearance, but many shoppers have stated that they still have not noticed any changes in the company’s prices. Instead, shoppers have been frequenting A&F’s competitors, such as Aeropostale and American Eagle, and shying away from the higher prices.
The company blames the confusion on its dedication to maintaining a more elite status, one that comes before slashing prices to extremely affordable levels especially when A&F’s desire to go international is taken into consideration. Focusing on prices, abercrombie and fitch says, has never been its priority, with the company instead hoping to tackle the recession by providing high-quality, fashionable apparel.
Even though I knew better, my daughter with the superstar style persuaded me to step through the portal of auditory hell to use a gift card she had long ago received for abercrombie and fitch. I blamed it on my practical nature as she led me right over the threshold to where the club level music volume was pulsing.
They have some nice looking stuff, but most of it requires layering (because it’s too skimpy to be worn without something under it or over it). After all, that’s their look for the female. They’ll cheerfully pull together an ensemble consisting of a cute tank top under a low cut paper thin t-shirt with a zipper hoodie to throw over the whole thing. That will probably be about $100 before you even look at the jeans, shorts or leggings.
There at the entry folding table, this sweet young thing doing triple duty (folding, security and greeting) shouted, “Hey there, what’s happening???” I gave her a mild stink eye and kept on walking deeper into the dark inner sanctum where they expect parents to shop for their teens clothing. After three exasperating minutes, I remembered why I make it a policy never to come in here: it makes my head want to pop off.
I urged my teenage icon, “just grab a t-shirt off of the clearance table and let’s get out of here.” Oh yeah, I was a lot of fun to be with at this point. I looked around at the other shopping couples , they didn’t seem to be filled with a visceral hate for the overpriced, dimly lit haven for the soon-to-be deaf.
Walking to the back of the store, I am bombarded with the larger-than-life-sized photos of taut young torsos in blue jeans barely pulled up enough to crest the top of their pubic bone. Strangely, all of the very short zippers are undone in the pictures. I fantasize briefly about…
…. ripping the ear bud off of the cashier’s head because her lips are moving but I can’t hear a word she is saying. Look, if you want me to pay you are going to have to tell me how much (but it’s too loud in here to hear) or maybe you could show me (but it’s too cave-like to see). No wonder we’re all overpaying in here. We just sign the bloody receipt so we can get out of the store without incident.
Take heed, people. Abercrombie’s a bitch and Hollister is her bratty little sister. If you really feel you must go in, strap on your war gear first. You also might want to role play with your teen and prepare them to hear the word no, that’s too skimpy, too sheer, too tight, etc. I’d also recommend some Bose noise-cancelling headphones and maybe a flashlight to help you find your way out.
